| Key Areas | Shopzilla has traditionally been very strong in home and garden areas. This was further reinforced by the purchase of the company by E.W.Scripps in the USA in 2004. Scripps are a very large publisher in the US and owned the home and garden network. This was a perfect match. The reason why Shopzilla has done so well in this non-conventional area is that they brought something new to the table of comparison shopping. The search algorithms and site achitecture meant that shoppers could easily find the products that were not easy to find on other sites. Historically all shopping sites have based their whole approach around SKU based products, esentially those that are all the same and therefore easy to match up and compare. As Shopzilla has veared away from the norm it has opened up a whole new world for merchants that don't sell identical products to everyone else. Overall their home and garden areas are the strongest among all the shopping engines, however the SKU based products have not been great perfromers recently, which sparked a large rate decrease in February 2009. We will see how this affects the ROI for the merchants and wherther this attracts more merchants to these somewhat sparse areas. |
